Exploring the Imperceptible

The Invisible Lab is a research and creative practice lab at the University of Texas at Dallas dedicated to exploring what cannot be directly seen, heard, or held. Working across the spiritual, natural, and legislative registers of invisibility, from infrasonic frequencies and electromagnetic phenomena to the legally unrecognized and the theologically unsayable, the lab uses technology not to resolve these forces into the visible but to occasion encounters with them. Through sound installation, optical phenomena, extended reality, and material experimentation, researchers in the Invisible Lab ask what it means to approach the imperceptible and what that approach reveals about the limits of human sensing and knowing. The lab serves as a creative and intellectual home for artists, designers, and researchers at UTD pursuing work at the threshold of perception.
